Keeping Up With Sleep Disorders

Submitted by jeorge on Tuesday, September 8, 2009 - 14:55

One of the most potentially dangerous sleep disorders is obstructive sleep apnea. This occurs when there are pauses in breathing due to obstructions in the airway. This could lead to reduced oxygen levels in the blood and an increased risk of stroke, sudden cardiac arrest and other cardiovascular problems in the future.

Anyone can develop any form of sleep disorders, regardless of age and gender. Different factors can account or cause these disorders, and possible treatments can vary depending on each case. When it comes to obstructive sleep apnea, those who are at more risk include men, people with large tonsils, being overweight, those who are over 40 years old and people who have a family history of sleep apnea.

There is presently a number of treatments for sleep apnea. Among them is CPAP, which help pump air into the airway to prevent it from collapsing or being blocked. A lot of doctors recommended this type of treatment for their patients. Studies even prove that the success rate of CPAP in treating this sleep disorder reaches up to 90 percent.

Nevertheless, many people are not comfortable with using CPAP, thus searching for another alternative is the key. Other options for treatment are surgery, oral appliances, positional therapy, losing weight, and the use of alternative medicines. Seeking the right treatment for sleep disorders is necessary because it is the only way to get back the lost sleep as well as the needed rest the body requires for development and everyday function.

Neglecting treatment for these sleep disorders can pose lethal to you health. Sleep deprivation, or too much of it, can cause mental, physical and emotional complications. There are many ways of dealing with any sleep disorder, all that is required is to consult your doctor and have a sleep apnea test. Talking with your doctor regarding any problems in sleeping can save your life.
