Sleep Apnea Heart Disease: 4 Facts You Need to Know

Submitted by elizabethwilson on Monday, August 24, 2009 - 01:50

Most sleep apnea sufferers have experienced the mild effects of sleep apnea like daytime sleepiness or lack or concentration. However, sleep apnea has other disastrous effects that can lead to heart disease.

Doctors have linked this medical condition to several heart conditions like hypertension and stroke. And sleep apnea heart disease can lead to death if not treated in time.

There are two major types of sleep apnea; obstructive sleep apnea and central sleep apnea.

Obstructive sleep apnea happens when the upper airways are blocked due to relaxation of the muscles near the back of the throat. When these muscles relax, the upper airways get blocked and breathing temporarily stops for up to sixty seconds. Central sleep apnea occurs when the part of the brain that controls breathing fails to work normally, leading to interruptions in breathing.

There are four important aspects that you need to know about sleep apnea heart diseases. Due to the decreased level of oxygen supply, the body is forced to discharge certain substances to try and stabilize the situation. In effect, this can worsen or lead to heart conditions.
Let’s examine four facts about sleep apnea heart disease conditions that are very dangerous:

1) Sleep apnea can lead to high blood pressure. When the blood oxygen levels suddenly drop, strain is put on the cardiovascular system and this can lead to hypertension or high blood pressure. It’s important that you get treatment to minimize the effects of sleep apnea heart diseases.

2) This condition can also cause heart failure. You are probably wondering how sleep apnea can lead to heart failure. Well, it’s been proven that heart muscles can become impaired when one’s blood pressure varies frequently. Combined with reductions in oxygen supply to the heart, heart failure is likely to occur.

3) Coronary heart diseases are associated with sleep apnea patients. This is caused by the slow build up of fat along the coronary artery. This gradual build up causes blockage and leads to reduced blood flow leading to conditions like chest pain and difficulty in breathing.

4) Sleep apnea heart conditions can lead to stroke. When there is blockage, oxygen supply to the brain is reduced, depriving the brain of important nutrients and oxygen. This damages the brain’s blood vessels, which can lead to stroke.
